Individual Tree Selection Harvesting

There are ever so few great people in this world that when you know one you like to brag: Soren Erickson is a revered safety training expert and founder of the "Game of Logging". Here you see Meg and Soren at a training session at the University of Maine. When you claim to have some expertise you better have the backing ...here's the proof that we've had the lessons and they were well taught.

MOST OF MY WORK INVOLVES INDIVIDUAL TREE SELECTION: THE MOST DETAILED AND INVOLVED OF HARVESTS. WHILE FAR FROM ROCKET SCIENCE, TO REMOVE INDIVIDUAL TREES FROM A STAND FOR SPECIFIC REASONS NOT MERELY RANDOMLY OR WILLFULLY (AS IN HIGHGRADING) IS AS CLOSE TO ART IN FORESTRY AS IT GETS. I WORK CLOSELY WITH FORESTERS, ADHERE TO LANDOWNER OBJECTIVES AND ADD MY OWN UNIQUE BLENDS OF VISION WHEN DESIGNING FORESTS FOR THE FUTURE, WHILE EXTRACTING REVENUES FOR TODAY.

I feel very fortunate to have been a harvester for Baxter State Park: I felled the oversized trees in the Scientific Forest Management Area of the Park behind the Pelletier's Rotney processors. Basically any of the designated trees that were too large for their mechanical operation to handle I cut with a chain saw and they ported them with their forwarders. The experience was very rewarding though very grueling in the bugs and the heat. Here is an example of one of the trees: 16" at the narrow end over 20' up and that's the first veneer cut.
